When I think of March, I think of snow melting, days getting longer and warm spring days on their way! I also think of the words: renew, refresh and awaken. One of the best and most effective ways to do these things for the body is to use hydrotherapy.
What is hydrotherapy? Quite simply, it’s using water to promote health and treat disease. It is a proven effective modality that has been practiced for centuries.
There are many ways to implement hydrotherapy into your health care regime. An easy one you can do daily is contrast showers. They are simple, easy and effective at helping to increase circulation in the body, increase energy, stimulate your immune system, ease chronic pain, flush toxins, increase your metabolism, increase the tone of your blood vessels and so, so much more!!!
Now, your question may be, how do I take a contrast shower?
Simple. Begin your shower with hot water. Then, once you are nice and toasty and warm (at least 3 mins) turn the water to as cold as you can stand for at least 30 seconds. This is where the contrast concept comes in and where you get all the benefits. So get in there and let the cold water stream over your skin! Then, turn the water back to hot, keep it hot for up to 3mins (at least one minute) and then turn it cold again for at least 30 secs. Repeat this cycle 3-4 times. The most important step is to END ON COLD!
The idea is that you want to get the blood flowing with warm water since the warm temperatures will dilate the blood vessels and flush the body with blood. Then switch to cold, which will drive the blood inward to warm and protect the internal organs from the cold; then we go back to warm to get the blood going again, etc.
My favorite method of using hydrotherapy is contrast pools and saunas like you would find at places like Body Blitz or Scandinave Spa. Whenever I go I always leave feeling like a new woman! It’s luxurious, fun and relaxing to do with others or alone.
