Living in the Caribbean, having a clean effective sunscreen on hand is key to protect both myself and my family from too much sun. And since May is Melanoma Awareness month, let’s talk sunscreens, shall we? I feel like I have tried so many different brands; some have been great, others not so much… So to help you avoid wasting your time and money, let me share with you my top picks and why.*
Green Beaver Natural Mineral Sunscreen Kids SPF 27
I like this sunscreen first and foremost because it’s very clean and eco friendly. It’s hypoallergenic, biodegradable (so it won’t hurt our environment), it’s fragrance free and free of other toxic chemicals that can be found in many conventional sunscreen brands. So as a mom, I feel comfortable using it on my little son and on myself.
I love that it’s in a spray bottle that is non-aerosol for travel and it sprays on CLEAR! Which means no annoying white streaks. I find this sunscreen easy to apply and moisturizing to my skin. The only thing about this sunscreen is that it’s not water or sweat resistant, so be sure to reapply as needed.
Think Sport Mineral Based Sunscreen for Kids SPF 50+
This is my favourite sunscreen for kids, hands-down! It’s sweat and water resistant for up to 80 minutes, which is amazing for your little one whether they’re at the beach or soccer practice. It’s a super clean mineral based, eco friendly sunscreen and rates excellent on the Environmental Working Group’s website. I feel comfortable using it on my family’s skin, and even on babies (check out their Think Baby version).
The only negative thing I have found with this sunscreen is that it is quite thick and does leave a slight white residue. Other than that, it is very high performing, smells great (from natural ingredients – not yucky chemicals) and is a mainstay in our household.
COOLA sunscreen is another favourite of mine. I especially love the Mineral BB Cream SPF 30. It goes on beautifully – it’s 100% non-greasy and feels like velvet on my face! There’s nothing worse than putting sunscreen on your face and feeling like a greasy, hot mess! This face sunscreen is my favourite by far and is mineral based, eco friendly and even has a little tint to it to give you some coverage. I apply it over top my moisturizer and then apply my make-up. Oh, and it’s water resistant for up to 40 minutes! I know, it’s just that awesome!!!
For body, I love the COOLA Citrus Mimosa SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray – it sounds more like a drink than a sunscreen, but trust me it smells awesome and it works! The delicious citrus smell comes from real citrus essential oils, strawberry extract and cucumber. This sunscreen leaves no residue at all, is non-greasy and I love the convenience of the spray bottle for quick application on the beach while I’m getting my tan on. It contains 70% organic ingredients and is water and sweat resistant for up to 40 minutes. Though, it’s awesome for adults, I wouldn’t use it for kiddos and be sure to apply it in a well ventilated area as it is an aerosol.
